Workhouse Wood

The woods around Workhouse sit on the edge of Shrewsbury's sprawl, and they're the sort of place locals know about and visitors miss entirely. It's a proper forest - dense enough to feel like you've actually left town, with decent walking trails threading through beech and oak. The woodland floor is soft underfoot most of the year, which means muddy boots are standard issue, but it also means the walk feels gentler than tramping around on hard paths.

You won't find facilities or visitor centres here - this is just trees, paths, and the occasional surprising glimpse of the Shropshire countryside beyond. It's ideal if you're staying at Stoney Acres or Spring Field and fancy a proper forest walk without driving anywhere. The whole thing takes about an hour to two hours depending on which route you take and how often you stop to listen to it being quiet.

Historically it's nothing special, just woodland that's been there doing woodland things. But that's partly the point. Families with young kids who like splashing through streams will get something out of it. Serious walkers might find it a bit tame. The real value is proximity - you're five miles from either of those parks, so it works brilliantly as a morning or late-afternoon leg-stretch when the weather's not demanding anything more ambitious. Go when it's wet rather than dry if you want the proper experience.
