Wortham Camp and Caravan Park

The marshland around Eye in Suffolk doesn't look like much from the road, but Wortham Camp pulls you straight into proper wetland territory. It's a working nature reserve where you'll spot reed warblers if you're patient, water voles if you're lucky, and in winter, visiting wildfowl that make the whole place feel rather alive. The walk through here is flat and undemanding - no scrambling required - which means families with younger legs won't complain, though anyone expecting dramatic scenery should look elsewhere. This is quiet, observational stuff. Bring binoculars. Bring a notebook. Leave the expectation for grandeur behind.

The reserve sits close enough to Eye that you can combine it with a proper look around the town itself, and if you're staying at Arthur's Retreat nearby, it's an easy morning wander before heading to one of Suffolk's better-known parks for the afternoon. Worth allowing a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested in birds and wetland habitat; half an hour if you're just passing through. There's a stillness here that either appeals or it doesn't - some visitors find it meditative, others find it a bit bleak. Go when water levels are up for the best wildlife activity.
