WW1 Centenary Memorial Beacon

Standing on elevated ground overlooking the Forth estuary, this memorial beacon marks one of hundreds lit across Britain on 11 November 2018 to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice. The simple stone structure isn't much to look at during the day - a modest cairn-like monument that takes all of five minutes to walk around. But that rather misses the point.

History buffs will appreciate the significance more than casual visitors. The beacon forms part of a nationwide network designed to honour the fallen, and there's something quite moving about standing here knowing identical flames flickered simultaneously from Land's End to the Highlands. The views across the water towards Edinburgh are decent enough, though hardly spectacular.

Families staying at nearby Leven Beach Holiday Park or Silverburn Park might combine a visit with a walk along the coast - it's barely two miles from either site. Don't expect interpretation boards or facilities; this is very much a contemplative spot rather than a tourist attraction. Allow fifteen minutes unless you're keen on the coastal walking, in which case the path continues in both directions for miles. Best visited on a clear day when the Forth bridges are visible in the distance, adding context to this corner of Scottish military history.
