Wynyard Planetarium & Observatory

The Wynyard Planetarium sits on the edge of County Durham, just a short drive from Stockton-on-Tees, and it's the sort of place that genuinely surprises you. Walk in expecting a modest local attraction and you'll find a proper working observatory with a planetarium that actually feels worth your time.

Inside, the dome theatre is small enough to be intimate but large enough that you're not crammed in like sardines. The projector fills the ceiling with constellations, planets, and deep-space footage that's genuinely immersive - the sort of thing that has kids pressing their necks back to stare upward for the full show. On clear nights, when the observatory opens up for observing sessions, you can look through telescopes at actual celestial objects. Saturn's rings through a proper scope? That stays with you.

It works best for families with kids aged seven upwards - younger children sometimes find the dark dome unsettling - and anyone with a genuine interest in astronomy rather than casual stargazing tourists. Allow two to three hours to get the most of it: the planetarium show itself runs about 45 minutes, leaving time to potter round the exhibits and maybe catch the observatory if you're there on an open evening.
