Y Gesail

The walk up Y Gesail is a solid afternoon's graft if you're based around Bala, with proper views across the Aran range once you've earned them. It's not a particularly dramatic peak - nothing like the big names further south - but the ridge approach offers enough interest to keep you focused for the two-to-three hours needed for the round trip.

You'll be climbing through moorland and grass, nothing too technical, though the path can be boggy in places depending on the weather. The summit itself sits at 886 metres, which puts it just above the clouds on a decent day. The real payoff is the panorama back towards Bala and across to Aran Fawddwy if conditions are kind.

This works well for families who've done a few hills before but aren't ready for the serious peaks. Experienced walkers might find it a bit straightforward, but it's the sort of walk that rewards you for showing up - no disappointment at the top. Allow proper time and bring layers; the weather can shift quickly up here.

If you're staying at Tyn Cornel Camping just 3 miles away, you could knock this out as a morning push before settling in for the evening. Porth Eryri Glamping, 6 miles south, is slightly further out but still very doable as part of a Bala-centred walking week. The walk itself is free, naturally - just park sensibly near the trailhead and respect the farmland.
