Yarwell Mill Country Park

The old mill building sits right where the River Nene bends near Peterborough, and it's genuinely worth stopping for if you're camping nearby. Yarwell Mill itself is the draw - a proper working watermill that speaks to the area's industrial past. You can wander the grounds, peek at the mechanics of the place, and understand how these mills powered rural communities for centuries. The riverside walk is peaceful without being boring; there's enough interest in the water, the restored buildings, and the general sense of history to keep you engaged for a solid hour or so.

Families with younger kids will get a decent amount from it - the mill machinery fascinates them, and there's space to move around. Older walkers appreciate it more as part of a longer riverside route rather than a destination in itself. The park works well if you're based at Rockingham Forest Park or Castle Farm Campsite, both within three miles. It breaks up a day of traditional park activities without requiring a major detour.

Admission appears to be free, which helps justify the visit. Go midweek if you can - weekends attract school groups and it gets a bit crowded around the mill entrance. Allow an hour minimum if you're actually exploring the buildings and grounds, longer if you fancy the walk extending further along the Nene. It's the kind of stop that rewards a bit of lingering rather than rushing through.
