Yellow Buttress

The walk out to Yellow Buttress rewards you with proper coastal views across Swansea Bay - the kind where you can actually see whether the weather's turning before it hits you. It's a sandstone outcrop on the Gower Peninsula, accessed from the beach at Oxwich or the clifftop paths depending on the tide. Not a strenuous hike, but you'll want decent shoes and to check the tides before you go - the rocks can cut you off if you're not careful.

What you get is a vantage point rather than a destination attraction. The buttress itself juts out from the coast in this distinctive burnt-yellow colour (hence the name), and from there the views stretch right along the bay. On a clear day you can pick out Swansea town centre; on a grey one it's atmospheric in that Welsh way. It's the sort of spot walkers actually bother with, not somewhere families with restless kids will thank you for dragging them to.

Given the caravan parks clustered around the Gower - Pitton Cross, Skysea, and Gower Holiday Village are all within striking distance - this works as a half-morning outing between proper coastal walks. It's free, takes about two hours round trip depending on your pace and the route you choose, and you should time it with the tide tables rather than just turning up. Go mid-morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you'll have a much nicer experience than trudging out in the glare of noon.
