Ynys Llanddwyn

The walk out to Ynys Llanddwyn is the whole point here. You're crossing a vast sweep of sand from the western edge of Anglesey, with the island itself - barely an island at all, really - sitting like a punctuation mark at the end of a long beach. On a clear day you get views all the way across to Snowdonia, which is properly stunning.

It's a straightforward coastal stroll, the kind you can do in trainers if the sand's firm enough, though wellies make sense after rain. The old lighthouse and church ruins on the island give you something to aim for, and there's genuine history in the air - Saint Dwynwen allegedly landed here back in the fifth century. Locals know it, but you won't find coachloads.

You'll need at least ninety minutes to get out and back, longer if you're dawdling about on the island itself. The real joy is the isolation and the light - late afternoon works brilliantly. Families with reasonably shod kids will manage it fine; those with toddlers might find it a slog. Walkers should absolutely make the trip, especially if you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Morfa Lodge or Dinlle are close enough for a half-day excursion.

It's free to visit, entirely at your own pace, and the car park at Newborough Warren is where you'll leave the vehicle. Go when the tide's out, obviously. This isn't about dramatic peaks or adrenaline - it's about space, sand, and unexpected solitude on an island that feels properly remote despite being a stone's throw from Caernarfon.
