Burford

Stone cottages tumble down the High Street in perfect honey-coloured harmony, making this one of the Cotswolds' most photographed towns. The medieval buildings lean companionably against each other, their mullioned windows catching the light just so. But Burford isn't just a pretty face - there's proper substance here too.

The town sits at the gateway to the Cotswolds, where the River Windrush cuts through limestone countryside that's been captivating visitors for centuries. Saint Peter church dominates the skyline, its spire visible for miles around. The High Street slopes dramatically downhill, lined with antique shops and tea rooms that feel genuinely lived-in rather than touristy.

Within striking distance lies Cotswold Wildlife Park, which makes for a brilliant family day out - their white rhinos are particularly impressive. The surrounding countryside offers lovely walks through ancient woodlands like Beer Furlong Clump and Handpost Covert, where you can escape the coach parties entirely.

Getting here is straightforward enough - Oxford's just 20 miles east via the A40, though the narrow streets can get congested on summer weekends. The town makes an excellent base for exploring the wider Cotswolds, from Chipping Norton to Lechlade.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks gives you the best of both worlds. Cotswolds Meadow Glamping has particularly good reviews, while several camping options dot the surrounding countryside. You can enjoy Burford's medieval magic in the early morning or evening when the tour groups have departed, then retreat to peaceful countryside accommodation where the only sounds are sheep and church bells.
