Christchurch

Two rivers meet the sea here in a spot that's managed to keep one foot in the past while the other strides confidently into modern leisure. Christchurch sits where the Avon and Stour converge before flowing into Christchurch Harbour, creating a network of waterways that gives this Dorset town its particular charm.

The Norman Priory dominates the town centre, its tower visible for miles across the surrounding heathland. But don't expect a sleepy heritage destination - Christchurch has a proper buzz about it, especially around the High Street and Castle Street where independent shops mix with the usual suspects. The Red House Museum tells the local story well, housed in a Georgian workhouse that's considerably more welcoming these days.

Avon Beach stretches eastward toward Mudeford, a proper sandy affair that gets busy on summer weekends but never feels overcrowded. The beach huts here are more affordable than their Bournemouth cousins, though that's not saying much. For drama, head to Hengistbury Head where clifftop paths offer cracking views across to the Isle of Wight on clear days.

Historic touches pop up around town - the medieval Ducking Stool and Stocks near the Priory remind you this place has seen some proper history. Tuttons Well marks an ancient spring that's been flowing since Saxon times.

Bournemouth is barely 10 minutes east, making Christchurch an excellent base for exploring the whole stretch of coast without the crowds and parking headaches. The New Forest begins just inland, while the Jurassic Coast beckons westward. Holiday parks dot the area between Christchurch and New Milton, offering easy access to both coast and countryside.
