Dorchester

The county town of Dorset has Thomas Hardy running through its veins like DNA. Those cobbled streets around the town centre aren't just pretty - they're where Hardy walked to school, where he worked as an architect, where he dreamed up Casterbridge. The real Dorchester is grittier than his fiction suggests, but infinitely more interesting.

South Street buzzes with proper independent shops and cafes that actually serve locals, not just tourists. The weekly market still sets up where it has for centuries. You'll find yourself wandering past Martyrs Cottage, where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were tried - a slice of working-class history that feels tangible here.

Just outside town, the landscape opens into Hardy's Wessex. Tadnoll Nature Reserve offers brilliant walks through ancient woodland. The more adventurous can trek to Weatherby Castle, where the Iron Age earthworks and Victorian obelisk create an oddly moving combination of old and older.

Getting here is dead simple. Trains run regularly from London Waterloo, taking about two and a half hours. The A35 cuts straight through if you're driving from the M3 corridor.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Durdle Door Holiday Park gives you the best of both worlds. You can explore Dorchester's museums and Hardy sites during the day, then retreat to the Jurassic Coast for evening walks. That stretch of coastline is only twenty minutes south, but feels like another world entirely. The contrast between market town bustle and clifftop solitude is what makes this corner of Dorset work so well.
