Ellesmere

Seven glacial meres dot the landscape around this market town, giving it the nickname 'Lake District of Shropshire'. Ellesmere sits on the edge of its largest mere, a proper stretch of water that's been drawing visitors since Victorian times. The town feels pleasantly unhurried, with independent shops lining the high street and plenty of green space.

The Mere itself is the star attraction - a 116-acre lake where you can spot herons, grebes and the occasional kingfisher. The Ellesmere Sculpture Trail winds around its perimeter, offering cracking views across the water. Heronwatch provides a brilliant vantage point for bird spotting, while The Paddle Bro's can sort you out with a kayak if you fancy getting on the water.

Beyond the mere, the surrounding countryside rolls gently towards the Welsh border. Saint Michael's Church dominates the town centre, its spire visible for miles around. For a proper walk, head up Frankton Hill - the views from the top stretch across three counties on a clear day.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Ellesmere sits on the A495, about 20 minutes from Oswestry by car. The nearest railway station is Gobowen, roughly four miles away.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a pub lunch, yet surrounded by some of Shropshire's loveliest countryside. The meres are right on your doorstep, and you're well placed for day trips into Wales or deeper into Shropshire's hill country.
