Hereford

The River Wye curves lazily through this cathedral city, where black-and-white timber buildings lean into cobbled streets like old friends sharing secrets. Hereford's medieval heart beats strongest around the magnificent cathedral - home to the famous Mappa Mundi and chained library - while the weekly market still draws farmers from across the county with proper local produce.

Wander beyond the city walls and you'll find yourself in glorious countryside within minutes. The Mordiford Dragon Trail leads through ancient woodlands where legend has it a fearsome dragon once terrorised locals. More peaceful is the Haugh Wood Butterfly Trail, particularly lovely in summer when the canopy filters sunlight onto woodland paths alive with wildlife.

Fownhope Park offers cracking walks through mature woodland, while Nupend Wood nature reserve provides excellent bird watching. The area's dotted with atmospheric churches too - St Cuthbert's Church at Holme Lacy sits in particularly beautiful grounds, and Prior's Frome Chapel has bags of medieval character.

Families shouldn't miss Angel's Animal Ark, where rescued farm animals and exotic creatures create an engaging day out. Joan's Hill Farm also provides that proper countryside experience many kids rarely get these days.

Hereford sits bang on the A49, making it easily accessible by car, while the railway station connects directly to Birmingham and Cardiff. The surrounding network of holiday parks - from glamping pods to traditional touring pitches - puts you right in the heart of this unspoilt corner of the Welsh borders. It's an ideal spot for exploring both Hereford's historic streets and the stunning Wye Valley beyond.
