Concrete roundabouts and shopping centres spring to mind when most people think of Milton Keynes, but venture to its northern reaches and you'll find proper countryside that feels worlds away from the grid roads. This postcode sits in what's technically West Northamptonshire now - the administrative boundaries shifted recently - but it's still very much MK's backyard.

Deanshanger anchors this corner, a village that's managed to keep its character despite the urban sprawl creeping northward. The War Memorial stands as the community's focal point, while the Village Sign tells the local story in typical English fashion. Preston Heights and Hartwell Heights offer decent walking with views across the Ouse Valley - not dramatic peaks by any stretch, but lovely rolling countryside that's perfect for clearing your head.

Silverstone's the big draw here, obviously. The racing circuit's just down the road, and those campsite options around Hamilton Fields and Silverstone Farm make perfect sense if you're planning a Grand Prix weekend. Even outside race weekends, the museum's worth a look.

Haversham sailing club sits on a particularly scenic stretch of the Great Ouse, where the water meadows stretch toward Hanslope. The remains of Castlethorpe Castle won't detain you long - there's barely anything left - but it's a pleasant walk along the river.

Getting here's straightforward enough. Junction 14 off the M1 puts you right in the thick of it, and Milton Keynes Central station's only 20 minutes south if you're coming by train. The area feels properly rural once you're off the main drag, yet you're still close enough to nip into MK for supplies or a decent meal.

Staying at one of the local campsites gives you the best of both worlds - countryside peace but with easy access to the attractions that actually matter.
