The Highlands wrap around this little town like a proper Scottish welcome, with peaks rising in every direction and Speyside's whisky heritage flowing through its veins. Newtonmore sits perfectly positioned for exploring the Cairngorms National Park, where serious walkers tackle giants like Binnein Mòr and Càrn Macoul while families can amble around Loch Dubh for easier rewards.

Lagan Wolftrax draws mountain bikers from across Scotland with its world-class trails cutting through ancient forests. The red and black routes here are proper challenges, but the green family trail lets everyone have a go. Between rides, the area's military history reveals itself through scattered memorials - the Calum Piobair Memorial and Balgowan War Memorial tell stories of local heroes.

Getting here from Inverness takes about an hour down the A9, with the town serving as an excellent base for the broader Strathspey region. The surrounding countryside rolls between heather moorland and dense pine forests, with Laggan Parish Church marking one of the area's older settlements. Those impressive Kirk Laggan Bridge abutments nearby hint at Victorian engineering ambitions in this remote corner.

Staying at one of the local parks makes perfect sense for exploring both the high peaks and gentler loch-side walks. You're close enough to nip into Aviemore for supplies, yet far enough away to enjoy proper Highland peace. The Memorial to Neil Usher up on the hillside offers cracking views back across the valley, especially rewarding after tackling one of the surrounding Munros.
