Northwich

Salt built this Cheshire town, and you can still feel that industrial legacy in the wide streets and solid Victorian architecture. Northwich sits where the Rivers Dane and Weaver converge, creating a landscape of waterways and former mining sites that nature has gradually reclaimed.

The town itself is proper working-class Cheshire - not chocolate-box pretty like nearby Chester, but authentic. The high street has the usual mix of chain shops and independents, though it can feel a bit quiet midweek. What makes Northwich special is everything just outside it.

Saltersford Locks offer lovely towpath walks along the River Weaver, while Anderton Nature Park provides proper countryside within walking distance of the town centre. The park's woodland trails and wetlands attract decent birdlife, making it well worth a morning's ramble.

Water features heavily here. Village Pool and Haydn's Pool are decent spots for fishing or just sitting with a sandwich, while Big Wood and Willowbed Wood provide shaded walks when the weather's warm. The area around Greenwood Fishery particularly appeals to anglers - it's peaceful and well-stocked.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Northwich sits just off the M6, making it accessible from Manchester in 45 minutes or Liverpool in an hour. The train station at Greenbank connects directly to Manchester and Chester, though services can be a bit sparse outside peak hours.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a pub meal, but you wake up surrounded by Cheshire's gentle countryside. The Weaver Valley's network of walking and cycling paths stretches for miles in every direction, while historic Warrington and cosmopolitan Manchester are both within easy day-trip distance.
