The commuter belt meets proper countryside around this well-heeled market town, where million-pound houses rub shoulders with ancient woodlands. Sevenoaks sits at the edge of the North Downs, giving it that rare combination of London accessibility and genuine rural beauty.

Kniver Hill feels like the middle of nowhere, yet you're barely 25 miles from Westminster. The town itself has that prosperous Kent feel - independent shops along the high street, decent pubs, and house prices that make your eyes water. But it's the surrounding landscape that really impresses.

Broom Wood and Birches Wood offer proper walking territory, with bridleways threading through oak and beech stands that have been here for centuries. Knockmill Wood extends the green corridor south, while The Toll provides another woodland escape when the town feels too busy. These aren't manicured parks - they're working countryside with muddy tracks and the occasional glimpse of deer.

History buffs will want to seek out the Roman Villa site, though there's precious little left to see above ground. The Kent Firefighting Museum offers something completely different - a proper local collection that tells the story of the county's fire services with genuine enthusiasm.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Sevenoaks station puts you on the fast line to London Bridge in under 45 minutes. The M25 junction 5 is close enough for easy access but far enough away to avoid the worst of the traffic noise.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring both the town and the wider Kentish countryside. You're within striking distance of the coast, the Downs, and half a dozen National Trust properties, while still being able to nip into London for the day.
