The surrounding woodlands like Beaconhill Beeches and Mitchelland Copse are lovely for a wander, especially in autumn when the leaves turn. Don't expect wilderness though; this is gentle Hampshire countryside, crisscrossed with bridleways and dotted with villages.

Droxford Station tells the story of the old Meon Valley Railway - worth a look if you're into industrial heritage. More dramatic is Fort Southwick, perched on the ridge above Portsmouth Harbour. During the war, this was where D-Day operations were planned. The views alone justify the trek up.

Down towards the coast, Southwick Park Golf Course sprawls across the downland, while the ruins of Southwick Priory hint at medieval grandeur. Portchester station puts you just 20 minutes from Portsmouth by rail if you fancy proper fish and chips by the harbour.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered through this area makes perfect sense. You're close enough to Portsmouth for day trips but far enough out to enjoy proper countryside quiet. The M27 runs nearby, so Winchester, Southampton and the New Forest are all within easy reach. It's that sweet spot between convenience and tranquillity that's hard to find along the south coast these days.
