1722 Waggonway Heritage Centre

The coal wagons that rumbled out of Prestonpans in the early 1700s were nothing special to look at, but they changed everything. This small museum tells the story of Scotland's first steam-powered railway - the Waggonway - and it's genuinely absorbing stuff, even if you're not a railway bore.

You'll walk through restored wagons, see actual artifacts from the era, and learn how miners' carts became the blueprint for railways that would eventually criss-cross the world. The detail work is proper impressive - they've clearly done their homework on how the thing actually operated day-to-day. Kids tend to enjoy climbing on and around the old stock, though five-year-olds might lose interest after thirty minutes or so.

The museum sits right in Prestonpans, a town that's seen better days but has real character if you're willing to poke around. It's free or cheap (information on their website will confirm current pricing), and you'll need roughly an hour to do it justice - longer if you're genuinely keen on industrial heritage.

What makes it worth the stop is the location. You're only a mile or so from Haven Seton Sands and Drummohr if you're basing yourself at either park for a week. The Waggonway fills a morning brilliantly without eating into beach time or other Scottish Lowlands attractions. It's not a full day out, but it's honest history in a real community rather than some over-polished heritage theme park.
