A' Chioch

The walk up A' Chioch isn't long, but it's properly steep and the views across the Sound of Mull make it worth every lungful. This is a genuine hill-walk rather than a gentle ramble - expect rough ground, exposed ridges if the weather turns, and a real sense of achievement when you reach the summit. The peak itself rewards you with panoramic vistas across Argyll's wilder coastline, though you'll want clear skies for the full effect.

It suits experienced walkers and hill-bagging types far more than casual strollers. Budget around two to three hours round trip depending on fitness, and go early to bag a decent weather window - Scottish hills can turn quickly. There's no café, shop, or facilities anywhere near the trailhead, so bring supplies and proper boots.

Base yourself at Island Pods or Port nan Gael Campsite, both just a few miles away on Isle of Mull, and you've got a solid day out combined with other walks in the area. The campsite option is better value if you're after facilities, though both get solid reviews. The drive from the campsites to the trailhead is straightforward enough.

Not one for the kids unless they're already hill-trained, and the payoff is views rather than facilities or features. But if you're a walker who likes solitude and proper Scottish scenery, this deserves a place in your itinerary.
