Abbey Church (deconsecrated)

The roofless stone skeleton of Abbey Church stands on the outskirts of Dunbar like a monument to Scotland's religious upheaval. What remains are the bare walls and arches of a medieval structure that's seen better centuries - far better. The deconsecration happened long ago, and what you're left with is essentially a ruin, though an atmospheric one if you catch it in decent light.

It's worth a quick stop if you're already in Dunbar, especially if you're the sort who gets a kick out of ecclesiastical archaeology. The stonework tells a story if you know how to read it, but don't expect interpretive boards or costumed guides. This is the real thing - just you, the wind, and some very old masonry.

The church works as part of a broader Dunbar wander rather than a destination in itself. Give it twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're photographing the details. It's free to access, which is the only way this works really. The nearby Belhaven Bay Caravan Park is close enough that you could easily combine a morning stroll here with a seaside afternoon - Belhaven Bay itself is just down the road and proper lovely when the weather's cooperating.

Winter visits are oddly effective. Summer brings tourists, but October onwards gives you the place more or less to yourself. Go at golden hour if you can manage it - the light transforms the weathered stones from grey to something almost amber.
