Stone walls the colour of stormy seas rise from rocky shores where North Sea waves crash with relentless force. This ancient burgh has weathered centuries of conflict and commerce, its High Street still dominated by the imposing Mercat Cross that once marked Scotland's most important grain market.

Dunbar proper feels refreshingly unpolished. The harbour where Cromwell once landed his troops now shelters fishing boats and pleasure craft, while the ruins of the medieval castle perch dramatically on volcanic rock. Getting here couldn't be easier - the train from Edinburgh takes just 45 minutes, making this coast surprisingly accessible. The town sits perfectly for exploring East Lothian's genteel countryside and dramatic coastline.
