Abbey Fish Ponds

Medieval monks knew a thing or two about fish farming, and these ancient ponds near Woodhall Spa prove the point. What remains today are the earthwork remnants of a monastic fish farm - rectangular depressions in the ground where carp and pike once swam in carefully managed waters. The abbey itself has long vanished, but these ponds tell the story of how religious communities fed themselves centuries ago.

Walking around the site takes little more than half an hour, though history enthusiasts could easily spend longer puzzling out the layout and imagining the bustling monastic life that once centred here. The ponds are overgrown now, more like marshy hollows than working waterways, but that adds to their atmospheric appeal.

Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much to see beyond grassy bumps and water-filled dips. But for anyone interested in medieval England or simply enjoying a peaceful countryside stroll, it's a lovely spot. The location works well as part of a longer walk or cycle ride through the Lincolnshire countryside, and you're only a short drive from several holiday parks including Woodhall Country Park and Bainland Lodge Retreats. Best visited on a dry day when the ground isn't too soggy underfoot.
