Woodhall Spa

Former RAF aircrew members once called this place home between missions. Today's Woodhall Spa has shed its wartime identity to become a proper spa town again, complete with Victorian architecture and tree-lined streets that feel surprisingly genteel for rural Lincolnshire. The town sits in a pocket of heathland and pine forests - quite different from the flat fenland most people associate with the county.

Walking the quiet streets, you'll notice how the place retains an almost therapeutic calm. The Kinema in the Woods still shows films in what was once an aircraft hangar, while the Broadway offers decent shopping without the usual high street chains. All Hallows Church anchors the town centre with its striking spire, and the surrounding area holds fascinating remnants like Halstead Hall's archaeological remains.

Ventures into the countryside reveal New Park Wood's walking trails and the intriguing Abbey Fish Ponds, medieval structures that hint at the area's monastic past. The Walled Gardens of Baumer provide another glimpse into local history, though they're a bit of a trek from the centre.

Lincoln lies 20 miles northeast, making Woodhall Spa an excellent base for exploring both the cathedral city and the Lincolnshire Wolds. The town sits just off the A153, easily reached from the A1 or via the old railway line that's now a cycle path.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. Woodhall Country Park and Jubilee Park offer traditional camping, while Treetop Hideaways and Bainland Lodge Retreats provide more luxurious options. You're well-placed for day trips to Lincoln, the coast at Skegness, or deeper into the Wolds' rolling countryside.
