Abbey Gardens

The ruins of what was once a Benedictine abbey now form the heart of this nature reserve just outside Shrewsbury. What strikes you first is how the medieval stonework sits completely at ease with the woodland that's reclaimed parts of it - trees grow through arches, moss softens the edges of old walls, and you're never quite sure where architecture ends and nature begins.

It's a proper spot for a wander rather than a structured tour. The grounds are open to explore at your own pace, with paths threading between the remains and across grassy areas where you'll find benches if you need a sit-down. History buffs will spend a good hour picking through the fragments - figuring out what was the chapter house, where the cloister stood, that sort of thing. Families with younger kids might manage half that before they're ready for something else, though the woods and open space give them room to burn off energy.

The setting works well as a break during a caravan holiday based at one of the nearby parks - Love2Stay or Oxon Hall are closest if you're plotting things out. It's free to visit and doesn't need booking. Head here early on a quiet morning if you can, before the school groups arrive. Late afternoon light through the trees is worth timing for too. Allow 45 minutes to an hour unless you're the type who sits with a notebook sketching every stone.
