Aberglaslyn - National Trust

The Aberglaslyn Pass cuts through the mountains like someone took a knife to the landscape. This National Trust-owned gorge sits just outside Caernarfon and genuinely stops you in your tracks - towering cliffs rise either side of the Glaslyn River, dense woodland clings to every slope, and the whole thing feels properly wild despite being utterly accessible.

You're looking at a walk rather than a sit-down attraction. The main path runs alongside the river through the pass itself - it's an easy mile or so depending on which direction you head, with views that shift constantly as you move through. The rock formations are dramatic without being overdone, and the river's actually interesting to watch, especially after rain when it kicks up a fuss.

This works brilliantly for families who like a decent walk without committing to a full mountain hike. Kids tend to engage with the water and the sense of being properly in nature. History types appreciate that this pass has been significant for centuries - it's a genuine old route through the mountains, not some Victorian invention.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing the full pass walk. It's free, which is the National Trust way, and you can park up near Beddgelert and Caernarfon areas. Several campsites cluster nearby - Beddgelert Campsite (2.2 miles away) and Cae Du (1.5 miles) both give you good base options for exploring the wider Snowdonia area. Winter visits can be moody and dramatic; summer's more family-friendly. Worth the detour if you're in the region.
