Abernethy National Nature Reserve

The Caledonian pine forest around Abernethy is one of Scotland's most important nature reserves, and walking through it feels genuinely primeval. Ancient, gnarled Scots pines tower overhead, their trunks red and weathered, with a carpet of heather and bilberry beneath your feet. You're here for the wildlife as much as the landscape - capercaillie, Scottish crossbills, and if you're lucky, golden eagles soaring overhead.

It's a proper destination for serious birdwatchers and botanists rather than casual strollers. Allow at least two to three hours to make it worthwhile, longer if you're photographing or sitting quietly with binoculars. The terrain is manageable but involves some gentle climbing through the forest, so it's not one for very young children or anyone with mobility issues.

The reserve is free to access, though visitor information can be patchy depending on which entrance you use. Spring and early summer are best for seeing birds in action, but autumn colours through the pines are stunning too. Winter's quieter and starker - you might see more wildlife but the paths get muddy.

The town itself is pleasant enough for provisions and an evening meal, but Abernethy is the real draw - it's one of the few places where Scotland's native forest still feels authentically wild rather than managed.
