Cairngorms Activities

The Cairngorms aren't so much a single spot you tick off as a vast playground you'll either love madly or find slightly overwhelming. Based near Grantown-on-Spey, this mountain range dominates the Highland landscape, and the activities on offer are genuinely broad - hiking, mountain biking, skiing in winter, kayaking, climbing, wildlife spotting. On a clear day the views stretch for miles; on a grey one, you'll barely see the summit.

Walkers will get the most out of it. There are trails for all levels, from gentle riverside strolls around Grantown itself up to proper Munro bagging if you've got the legs for it. The skiing in winter is a draw, though conditions are unpredictable and busy periods can feel rammed. Mountain bikers have taken to the slopes in recent years and there's decent infrastructure for it. If you're after something quieter, the birdwatching and wildlife photography angle is superb - golden eagles, red squirrels, the lot.

There's no central admission fee. Individual activities vary - ski lifts cost money, but plenty of the hiking is free. Allow at least a few hours for a decent walk, though you could easily spend days exploring without repeating yourself. Timing matters. Summer brings midges that'll drive you spare; winter means snow can close higher routes; autumn and spring are usually your sweet spot.

Staying at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park puts you five minutes from town and an easy base for launching into the hills. It's proper proper mountain territory rather than a manicured country park experience.
