Ackhurst Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Leyland, Ackhurst Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a trip around. Mature trees, decent paths, and enough quiet to actually hear birdsong - it's a genuine breath of fresh air if you're camping nearby at Royal Umpire or just fancy escaping the town centre for an hour.

The paths wind through mixed woodland with nothing fancy in the way of facilities or interpretation boards, which is either brilliant or boring depending on your mood. If you've got kids who enjoy exploring without needing a playground every five minutes, they'll find it engaging enough. Walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds, though it's not remarkable enough to warrant a special journey from miles away.

Timing-wise, allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent loop. Early morning is when it's at its best - fewer people about, and the light comes through the canopy properly. There's something calming about it, the sort of wood where you actually see foxes or hear woodpeckers if you're patient.
