Acomb Wood

The woods around Acomb, just outside York, are proper lovely for a decent walk without the crowds you'd find at the bigger nature reserves. It's a mixed woodland - nothing fancy, just the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think and spot a few birds if you're lucky. The paths wind through beech and oak, and in autumn the leaf litter is thick enough that your footsteps go completely quiet.

This works best for walkers who want something genuine rather than manicured. History types might appreciate that you're just minutes from York itself, where the layers run deep, but Acomb Wood is really about the woodland itself, not any particular story. Kids will get a solid hour or so out of it before the novelty wears off - there's room to let them run about, but it's not a playground.

Access seems to be free, and there's no official visiting hours posted, so you can turn up when it suits. Allow a good couple of hours if you're actually walking it properly rather than just poking about for twenty minutes. Early morning is best if you want to avoid dog walkers, though there's plenty of space for everyone.
