Albion Field

Right on Pembroke's doorstep, Albion Field is a proper working nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself. You get marshland, scrub, and open grassland - the sort of place where you actually spot things rather than just walk through prettified scenery. Waders, wildfowl, and the occasional rare visitor depending on season. It's low-key stuff, which is exactly why it works.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from this one. Binoculars are essential; you're not here for the views so much as what you can clock through them. The trails are straightforward enough - nothing that'll knacker you - and you can do a quick circuit in under an hour if you're not stopping to stare at every reed bed. Families with patient kids work well here too, though anyone under eight might find the lack of drama a bit dull.

Access details are thin on the ground, so ring ahead or check with Pembroke tourist office before you head out. Free admission seems likely given it's a nature reserve, but don't quote me on that.

If you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Windmill Hill is closest in Pembroke itself, or try Grass Roots for something a touch different with the alpaca trekking - Albion Field fills a gap nicely between beach days and longer walks. It's not a day-killer on its own, but paired with a walk round Pembroke town or a drive to the coastal spots nearby, it slots in properly. Best visited early morning when the light's right and the wildlife's most active.
