Alconbury Flashes

The Alconbury Flashes near Bury are a bit of a puzzle at first glance - these shallow pools and wetland areas don't announce themselves dramatically, but that's rather the point. You're standing in what was once industrial wasteland, now quietly reclaimed by nature into something genuinely worthwhile.

The flashes themselves are flooded clay pits left over from centuries of mining activity, and they've transformed into a proper haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Expect to spot great crested grebes, various duck species, and if you time it right, some excellent migratory birds during spring and autumn. The walking is easy and flat - no huffing up hillsides - which makes it accessible for families with younger children or anyone wanting a gentle amble rather than a proper hike.
