All Saints Church, Oystermouth

The medieval tower of All Saints Church dominates Oystermouth village like a squat grey sentinel, visible from half the Gower Peninsula on a clear day. Inside, it's all vaulted ceilings and worn stone - the sort of place where your footsteps echo properly and the light comes through in dusty shafts. The church dates back to the 13th century, though like most Welsh parish churches it's been rebuilt, extended and fiddled with ever since.

It's worth the detour if you're already in Oystermouth - the village itself is pleasant enough, wedged between Swansea Bay and the start of the Gower, with the castle ruins just a short walk away. The church works nicely as part of a morning's wandering rather than a standalone trip. History types will find it satisfying; kids will tolerate it for twenty minutes before getting restless. The churchyard's quite peaceful if you need five minutes of quiet.

Oystermouth sits just three miles or so from Blackhills Leisure and Swansea Marina Tourer Park, making it an easy addition to a caravan holiday in the area. Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park is five miles east if you're looking for something more central to the Gower's best bits - beaches, walks, that sort of thing. The church itself appears to be free to visit, though checking locally before you go wouldn't hurt. Allow thirty minutes maximum, longer only if you're genuinely into Victorian restoration work.
