All Saints' & St Margaret's Church

A medieval church on the edge of Lowestoft that feels properly removed from the seafront bustle, All Saints' & St Margaret's rewards the walk east from town with real Suffolk character. The building itself is a jumble of different centuries - flint walls that have seen off seven centuries of North Sea gales, a tower that's been modified and reinforced more times than you'd think necessary, and interiors that speak to generations of locals who've worshipped here since the 1300s.

Inside, the font's ancient and the woodwork's the sort of thing that makes you linger longer than you'd planned. If you're the type who actually reads the plaques and thinks about who lies beneath the stones, you'll spend a good hour here. Kids will get restless fast though - there's no gift shop theatrics, just a quiet church doing what it's done for centuries.

Free to visit, obviously, though opening hours aren't advertised so turning up on a weekday afternoon is safer than banking on a Sunday. The walk from central Lowestoft takes about twenty minutes, which makes it ideal if you're staying at Pakefield Holiday Park just down the road and fancy breaking up a beach day with something genuinely old.

Pair it with the coastal paths nearby - Kessingland's only three miles south and has proper walking routes along the cliffs. It's not a destination unto itself, but if you're staying locally and the weather's turned drizzly, it's worth the detour.
