Allerthorpe Woods

The woodland walk at Allerthorpe, just outside York, is one of those spots locals know but tourists miss. You're walking through proper old-growth woodland here - mature trees creating a cathedral-like canopy, the kind of place where you actually feel the quietness rather than just hear the absence of noise. It's a straightforward woodland ramble, accessible enough for families with kids who can manage muddy paths, but with enough space and cover that it feels genuinely removed from the nearby farmland and holiday parks scattered around the area.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore without rushing. The paths are well-trodden but unmanicured - you'll want proper walking shoes after rain. There's something restorative about it that the manicured country parks can't quite manage. It's not dramatic or showy. No waterfall, no viewpoint at the top, no Instagram moment. Just good, honest woodland.

Stay at one of the glamping spots nearby - The Spinney or Wolds Glamping Pods are close enough for an easy morning walk before heading into York itself. It works well as a quieter counterpoint to a holiday centred on the city. You won't spend all day here, but you'll be glad you came. Better still if you're combining it with walking the rest of the Allerthorpe estate or heading further into the surrounding countryside. Bring a book, take your time, expect nothing, and you'll leave having found something.
