Allt Cefn Gwyddyl

Dense woodland carpets the hillside above New Quay, offering a proper escape from the coastal crowds below. Allt Cefn Gwyddyl spreads across the slopes like a green blanket, its Welsh oak and birch creating dappled light even on the brightest days. The forest feels wild and untamed - no manicured paths or visitor centres here, just proper woodland walking where you might spot red kites circling overhead.

Families with older children who fancy a bit of adventure will love scrambling through the undergrowth, though it's not pushchair territory by any stretch. Dog walkers have plenty of space to let their pets run free, and the peace makes it brilliant for anyone wanting to decompress after a day at the beach.

Getting there involves a bit of uphill slog from the holiday parks dotted around New Quay - Ocean Heights and Haven Quay West are both within half a mile. Worth packing a flask and making an afternoon of it, especially in autumn when the leaves turn. The views back down to Cardigan Bay through the tree gaps are lovely on a clear day, though you'll work for them.
