Allt Parc y Person

The forest at Allt Parc y Person is a proper walk through old woodland on the fringes of Carmarthenshire, just outside Carmarthen town. It's not the sort of place where you'll find manicured paths and visitor centres - this is working Welsh forest, with decent tree cover, streams running through, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how rare it actually is.

The appeal here is straightforward. If you're after a couple of hours of genuine forest walking, away from the main tourist routes, this delivers. Families with older kids will get on fine with it - younger ones might tire on the muddier sections. The woodland canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels moody rather than depressing. Spring brings bluebells; autumn's a riot of damp leaves and fungi.

There's no charge for access, which is just how it should be. Give yourself two to three hours to move through comfortably without rushing. The paths aren't always obvious, so go with decent boots and possibly a map - there's nothing dramatic enough to get genuinely lost, but you won't be following neon arrows either.

If you're glamping at Embrace the Space just down the road - and those hot tubs do look tempting - this forest makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for coffee. It's the sort of place that rounds out a park break nicely. Not Instagram-worthy, but honest work.
