Moelfre

The walk up Moelfre, just outside Carmarthen, rewards you with proper views across the Tywi Valley - the sort of panorama that makes the climb feel entirely justified. It's not a monster of a peak, but it's steep enough to get the blood pumping, and the moorland setting feels properly wild despite being only a few miles from town.

You get 360-degree views from the top if the weather cooperates, which admittedly isn't guaranteed in South Wales. On a clear day you can see right across to the Black Mountains. The climb takes most people between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath.

This works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Embrace the Space has those yurts with hot tubs, which is rather pleasant after working your legs on the hill. Woodland Rise and The Hiveaway are both within reasonable distance too. It's the sort of walk families with older kids will genuinely enjoy, though younger ones might find it a slog depending on their tolerance for climbing.

Go midweek if you can - weekends bring more foot traffic, which rather defeats the purpose of seeking out somewhere this quiet. The moorland itself is fairly exposed, so wind can be brutal in winter. Spring and early autumn are your sweet spot. Free to access, naturally - it's open moorland. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking photos and enjoying the views properly.
