Allt Wen

Standing at 475 metres, this properly steep climb above Penmaenmawr rewards you with cracking views across the Menai Strait to Anglesey. The path isn't marked particularly well, so you'll need decent map reading skills and a good sense of direction to reach the rocky summit cairn.

Hikers who fancy a proper challenge will get the most from Allt Wen - it's not a casual family stroll by any stretch. The route up from the village involves some scrambling over loose scree, and the final approach to the top gets quite exposed. Allow three hours return if you're reasonably fit.

What makes the slog worthwhile is the view back down the coast towards Llanfairfechan and beyond to Snowdonia's peaks. On clear days you can pick out Tryfan and the Glyderau range across the valley. The descent can be tricky on wet rocks, so proper walking boots are essential.

For families staying at nearby parks like Lyons Pendyffryn Hall or Tyddyn Llan, this isn't one for the kids unless they're experienced young walkers.
