Penmaen-Bach

Scrambling up this modest peak just west of Penmaenmawr rewards you with cracking views across the Menai Strait to Anglesey. The climb itself isn't particularly challenging - more of a steep hill walk really - but the panoramic vistas from the 623-metre summit make it well worth the effort. On clear days you can see right across to the Isle of Man.

Families with older children will find this a manageable outing, though the rocky sections near the top might prove tricky for little ones. Proper walking boots are essential as the path gets quite loose and slippery, especially after rain. Allow around two hours for the round trip from the car park.

What sets Penmaen-Bach apart from its more famous neighbours is the relative quiet - you're unlikely to encounter the crowds that swarm Snowdon or even Pen y Fan. The approach from the A55 is straightforward enough, making it an excellent leg-stretcher if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Lyons Pendyffryn Hall or Aberconwy Resort.

Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best light for photography, and you'll often have the summit entirely to yourself. It's not going to challenge serious hikers, but for a short burst of proper Welsh mountain air without the tourist masses, it does the job nicely.
