Allt y Fan

Dense woodland carpets the hillsides here, creating one of those proper Welsh forest experiences where ancient oaks and ash trees filter the light into dappled patterns on the forest floor. Allt y Fan sits in the heart of Carmarthenshire's countryside, just outside RhydArWen, offering miles of unmarked trails that wind through mature woodland.

Walkers will love the variety on offer - from gentle ambles along established paths to more challenging scrambles up steeper sections where the trees thin out and views open across the surrounding valleys. The forest feels genuinely wild in places, with fallen logs creating natural obstacles and streams cutting through mossy gullies.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper walk will find plenty to explore, though this isn't really buggy-friendly territory. The lack of formal facilities means you're left to your own devices, which adds to the adventure but also means bringing everything you need.

Staying at one of the nearby glamping sites like Erwain Escapes or Gelli Glamping makes this an easy morning expedition. Allow at least two hours to do it justice, though serious ramblers could easily spend half a day following the various deer tracks and old forestry roads that criss-cross the area. Best visited in spring when the woodland floor comes alive with bluebells, or autumn for the proper Welsh forest experience in full colour.
