Gaer Fawr

The walk up Gaer Fawr rewards you properly once you've done the graft. This Carmarthenshire peak sits just outside RhydArWen and isn't what you'd call a gentle stroll - the climb is proper steep in places and the ground underfoot can be boggy after rain. But stick with it and you'll find yourself on a summit that feels genuinely wild, with views stretching across the Brecon Beacons to one side and westwards towards the coast on a clear day.

It's a hill walk rather than a casual family amble, so set aside a good two hours minimum including time at the top. The approach is straightforward enough from the small car park near the village, though there's no visitor centre or facilities up there - bring water and a map, and don't rely on phone signal. The whole experience has that satisfying no-frills quality you get from proper Welsh hill walking.

If you're based at one of the glamping sites nearby - Erwain Escapes is barely a mile away, Head For The Hills even closer - Gaer Fawr works as a morning walk before breakfast or an evening summit for sunset. It's the sort of peak that rewards walkers more than sightseers, and families with older kids who can handle a sustained climb will get something genuine from it. Others might find the effort-to-view ratio a bit steep for what it is.
