Alnwick Castle Golf Club

It's an 18-hole course that demands respect. The design takes proper advantage of the castle's dramatic setting, with fairways winding through mature trees and some genuinely testing holes. Golfers will find it challenging without being punitive, and the views across Northumberland's countryside are legitimately good. The clubhouse sits well within the castle grounds, so there's a real sense of occasion to the place.

You'll need to be a member or book well ahead as a visitor - it's not a casual walk-up affair. Green fees aren't cheap, but you're paying for quality turf and an experience you won't get at most courses. Allow four hours minimum, longer if you play off a high handicap.

If you're camping nearby - Coast and Castles is under five miles away, Percy Wood and Woodland Chase both within easy reach - this makes a brilliant addition to a Northumberland break. You've got Alnwick Castle itself to explore, plus miles of coastal walking. But if you're not a golfer, don't force it. The course isn't really a spectator sport, and the castle is the real draw. Leave it for the players in your group.
