Alverstone Mead

Walking through this open stretch of countryside between Sandown and Godshill, you'll find yourself on proper island terrain - rolling grassland that gives you a sense of how the Isle of Wight looked before development took hold. The mead itself is essentially a large field, but it serves an important purpose as a green lung in an area that's becoming increasingly built up.

Families staying at nearby parks like Fairway Holiday Park or Cheverton Copse will appreciate having somewhere to let the kids run free without worrying about traffic or crowds. It's the sort of spot where you might see local dog walkers early morning or late afternoon, but otherwise you'll likely have it to yourself.

The real appeal here is the space and quiet. After a day at Sandown's busy seafront, this feels wonderfully peaceful. There's nothing specific to 'do' as such - it's more about getting a bit of fresh air and countryside into your holiday. Walkers following the island's footpath network often cross through here, and it makes a decent picnic spot if you're touring the area by car.

Don't expect dramatic views or historic interest - this is simply a pleasant patch of green space that's free to wander. Worth a quick detour if you're staying locally, but probably not worth a special journey from the other side of the island.
