Am Ploc - Open Air Church

The moment you spot it, you understand why someone built a church here - and then left off the roof. Am Ploc is an open-air chapel on the shores of Loch Carron, near Strathcarron, and it's one of those places that feels properly raw and honest. No pews, no heating, no nonsense. Just stone walls, the sky above, and water in front of you.

It's genuinely moving in a way that's hard to articulate without sounding daft. The simplicity of it works. You can sit on the low wall and watch the loch, feel the Highland wind, and it becomes clear why this spot was chosen for reflection. There's a small cross inside and little else - the landscape does the heavy lifting.

This isn't a destination you'd spend hours at. Twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're the contemplative sort, then you'll have seen everything. But it's absolutely worth the short detour from Strathcarron if you're staying in the area. Pair it with a walk along the loch shore or camp at Shieldaig Camping & Cabins nearby for a proper Highland experience.

Access appears straightforward - there's a pull-in and short walk, though the weather here changes fast. Come on a clear day if you can; mist rolling off the water is atmospheric, but it also means you'll miss the views across to the mountains. Free to visit, naturally. No facilities, so don't expect anything.
