Amazon World Zoo Park

Feeding time with the lemurs is when Amazon World truly comes alive. These Madagascar natives are the undisputed stars of this compact zoo just outside Sandown, and watching them leap about their enclosure whilst chattering away is proper entertaining. The whole place has a South American theme running through it, though you'll spot plenty of creatures from other continents too.

Families with younger children will get the most from a visit here. The scale works well for little legs - you can see everything comfortably in a couple of hours without anyone getting knackered. Interactive experiences like the walk-through lemur enclosure and bird feeding sessions keep kids engaged, while the indoor tropical house provides a welcome warm-up on cooler days.

What sets Amazon World apart from larger zoos is the close-up encounters. You're not squinting through thick glass at distant animals - many of the enclosures allow you to get remarkably close to the residents. The jaguars are magnificent when they're active, though like most big cats they're often having a kip.

Location-wise, it's brilliantly placed for a holiday park stay. Under the Stars IOW Glamping sits practically next door, while Cheverton Copse and the various Parkdean sites are all within easy reach. It makes for a perfect rainy day alternative when the beach loses its appeal.
