The Amerton Railway runs a narrow-gauge heritage line just outside Stafford, and tucked alongside it is a proper little picnic area that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots or caravan parks. You can spread out on the grass, watch the vintage trains potter past, and the kids won't get bored because there's actual movement and noise rather than just sitting in silent countryside.

It's free to use the picnic area itself, though if you want the full experience you'd pay for a train ride - usually a couple of quid for adults, less for children. Most people allow an hour or so for a decent break here, though you could stretch it to two if the trains are running and you're in no rush. The site is well-maintained and has the kind of charm that comes from being run by enthusiasts rather than a corporate operator.

The location suits families staying at Poppy Fields Glamping - it's barely a five-minute drive away - or any of the caravan sites dotted around within a few miles. It's the sort of stop you'd make on a rainy afternoon when you need to get the children out of the holiday park but can't face anything too ambitious. Stafford itself is close by if you need shops or a proper meal afterwards.
