Amgueddfa Sir Gâr - Carmarthenshire Museum

The local museum in Carmarthen is housed in a decent Victorian building and covers the county's history from Roman times through to the modern day. You'll find Roman artefacts, medieval bits, farming implements, and exhibits on Carmarthenshire's industrial past - mostly coal and tinplate work. It's a proper regional museum: solid rather than showy, the kind of place that takes its job seriously without trying to be something it isn't.

Who gets the most from it? History enthusiasts will spend a good couple of hours picking through the collections. Families with younger kids might manage an hour before restlessness sets in - there's handling material and interactive bits, but it's not a theme park. If you're interested in Welsh industrial heritage or Roman Britain, it's absolutely worth the visit. Casual tourists might find it a bit thin on glamour.

Allow about ninety minutes to two hours if you're taking it slowly. Check the website for current opening hours and admission charges before you go - these things change, and the last thing you want is turning up only to find it closed for a Tuesday.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around - Quarry Lodge is closest at under two miles away, or Towy Valley further out - the museum makes a solid rainy-day plan or a break from the sites. Carmarthen itself has enough cafes and shops to make a half-day of it. It won't knock your socks off, but it's exactly what a good county museum should be.
