Merlins Hill

The walk up Merlin's Hill takes you out of Carmarthen proper and into proper Welsh countryside - rolling farmland that opens up the moment you start climbing. It's not a grueling slog; more of a steady ramble that rewards you with views across Carmarthenshire that make the effort worthwhile.

The summit itself is modest in height but significant in what it offers. On a clear day you can pick out the Towy Valley stretching below, the Black Mountains in the distance, and on good visibility, hints of the Brecon Beacons. Walkers and outdoor types will find this genuinely rewarding - the sort of place where you feel you've earned your vista without needing technical gear or mountaineering experience.

Allow two to three hours for a proper outing, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The route is straightforward enough that families with older children can manage it, though younger legs might find it tiring. Go on a weekday morning if you can - you'll have the hilltop mostly to yourself.
