You'll find Ancestor tucked away near Waltham Cross, a gallery that punches well above its weight for a small Hertfordshire venue. Contemporary art is the draw here - the kind of work that makes you stop and actually think rather than shuffle through and tick a box.

The space itself is refreshingly unpretentious. Local and emerging artists feature heavily, which means the exhibitions change regularly and keep things feeling fresh. If you're the sort who enjoys getting under the skin of what artists are trying to say, this is worth a proper look. It's not the Tate, but it doesn't pretend to be.

Couple of hours will do it justice, depending on what's on and how long you linger over pieces. No entry fee that I'm aware of, though do check before heading over as these things can change. It's a gallery you visit with intention rather than stumbling into by accident.

For a park holiday in the area, you're well positioned. Fowley Mead Park sits just under a mile away - close enough for an afternoon visit if you fancy a break from the caravan or lodge. Theobalds Park is slightly further at two and a half miles, but worth knowing about if you're planning multiple trips. The gallery won't dominate your holiday, but it's a solid option for a quiet morning or if the weather turns damp.
